The Actium Colony:
An "Actium Maximus" Fansite
About This Site
Welcome to the Actium Colony! A fansite dedicated to the 2005 film "Actium Maximus: War of the Alien Dinosaurs", released by Troma Entertainment. Here you can find some details to the story, characters, and overall themes to the film by exploring the links above.
I first purchased the DVD for "Actium Maximus" way back in 2005 or 2006. It's been over a decade now and I still come back to this strange film from time to time in hopes of deciphering it. A high concept independent film in the same vein as "Star Wars" or "Dune", but mixed with the sensibilities of a Sid & Marty Kroft puppet show. "Actium Maximus" is somehow a beautiful mess, filled with disgusting but interesting characters. When you gaze upon the Kolaminators ("alien dinosaurs") you can't help but find them interesting to look at. They're ugly and off-putting, but they also don't look like any creature you've ever seen in a movie before.
"Actium Maximus" definitely captures that feeling you get when you try to remember what you were dreaming about just after you wake up. It is a surreal and strange pulp sci-fi story that goes on for what feels like forever, building it's own story and mythos while both answering your questions but also confusing you every step of the way. The puppets are gruesome, the blue screen technology is obvious, the sound quality is quite bad at times, and some of the alien creatures are almost unintelligible. Plus there is no assurance at all that any of the story-lines will come together! But the setting and characters are so interesting that you lose track of all of that. It's clear who the villains are, but are there any heroes at all? This movie is so strange, ugly, and beautiful I can't help but watch.
"Actium Maximus" reminds me of old drive-in movies, creature features, and exploitation horror films. It also reminds me of the many "Star Wars" piggyback films, like "Starcrash", "Battle Beyond the Stars", "War of the Robots", "Message from Space", and especially the Turkish version of "Star Wars". I can honestly say this is one of my all-time favorite films, and I hope Actium Colony can help bring awareness to a movie to a movie that needs more attention.
